Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (Creativity : Flow and the Psychology of Discovery and Invention )
outlines a model for creativity based on three components:
- Domain - this is a particular area of expertise that is governed by its own set of symbolic rules - eg Maths, Music, Physics
- Field - this is the set of individuals who act as the gatekeepers to the domain. They decide whether a new idea or product is included in the domain
- Person - whoever comes up with the new idea
Mihaly believes that creativity only occurs when the person using the symbols of a given domain has a new idea or sees a new pattern and the field selects this for inclusion in the domain. The domain is altered or a new one created. |
