Creative FREEDOM - Stretch
Goal setting

A person needs a little madness, or else they never dare cut the rope and be free.

What does this exercise mean and why is it included in a creativity programme? The idea came from material from the book Guide to Creative action by S Parnes et al.

When faced with a challenge our mental habits can cut off too early so we can say no to a question rather than make an effort.

This exercise was to measure your goal setting and actual achievement.
I anticipate that most people will exceed their expectations and that they will set a goal which will be beneath their capability.

Were you one of those people?

If I asked you if you could name 20 different types of birds in 2-3 minutes I suspect most people would immediately react negatively. But once you get going it's surprising how easy it seems. Perhaps challenges are the same. Daunting until you get going!

To improve your creativity you must be brave. You must set your goals a little higher than you would normally when faced with a challenge. It may seem strange that setting a high goal will actually produce more results but....our subconscious mind seems to react to thoughts in the conscious world.

If you think you can or you think you can't you will be correct!.
