Creative FREEDOM - Rules

Background

We need 'internal rules' to help us make sense of reality. Some are "sacred", which we accept without question. There lies a challenge.

Blindly following rules which we cannot actually see can inhibit our creativity because we don't bother to question. As the world changes so do the rules and they become obsolete, out of date, or no longer relevant in the current context.

By uncovering and questioning a generally-accepted rule, you open your thinking to other paths. This doesn't mean the rule is no longer valid - it means that there maybe other equally valid situations as well.

Examples

You are remembered for the rules you break

Here are some possible advantages of ignoring the communications rule.

  • Nothing would need justifying
  • You can do what you like and nobody knows what you are doing
  • People don't get upset and you don't upset people
  • An interpersonal system of disseminating information is not needed
  • A technical communications infrastructure is not needed
  • Message overload is prevented (from e-mail, telephone, documents)
  • Meetings aren't needed - save 2 hour minimum for each
  • Don't waste time waiting for meetings to start
  • No interruptions
  • Ignorance is bliss
  • You can't be misunderstood - no feedback
  • No need to worry about bad news (there isn't any)
  • You wouldn't need courses to improve communications
  • The decision making process is made much quicker
  • Ideas and initiatives aren't killed off.
  • Politics are stopped

So What?

There is no rule without revolts and conspiracies, even as there is no property without work and worry.

HeWell, you may say, that was fun, but so what?.

Well if you do want to strive for a communications philosophy, the above list can actually help you by reversing what they imply.

Take 'an interpersonal system for disseminating information is not needed'. A straight reversal of this tells you that a cascade system of communications is desireable. Nothing new in this particular one, but because you have approached this challenge from the opposite end there is a greater chance that you will arrive at a new concept for your communications strategy.
